Description

Tecmar Expansion Chassis Model 20001 – Early IBM PC Peripheral

Offered here is a Tecmar Expansion Chassis, Model 20001, produced in the early 1980s by Tecmar Inc. of Solon, Ohio. In the earliest days of the IBM PC, expansion quickly became a necessity—five or eight slots were never enough for the growing world of memory boards, storage controllers, and custom interfaces. Tecmar seized that moment, famously unveiling more than 20 new expansion products at COMDEX 1981, an event that cemented its reputation as one of the most innovative and ambitious companies in the young PC industry. This expansion chassis reflects that pioneering vision, providing users with the means to break through IBM’s hardware limitations.

The unit features a steel case with front ventilation slots, a built-in power supply, rear cooling fan, dual AC outlets, and ribbon cable interface for connection to the host system. It was designed to house multiple ISA cards on an internal backplane, allowing professionals to configure their PCs for advanced applications in engineering, science, and business. The chassis still retains its original Tecmar badge, part and serial number label, and Made in U.S.A. marking—details that highlight its authenticity and heritage. More than just an accessory, it is a time capsule of early PC ingenuity, representing the creativity that fueled the rapid expansion of computing into every corner of modern life.

A rarely encountered survivor, this piece will appeal to vintage computing enthusiasts, serious collectors, and museums seeking to preserve the story of how small companies like Tecmar helped shape the personal computer revolution.
