Description

Reynalda Quezada Owl Effigy Black-on-Black Pottery, 10.25"

A finely hand-coiled and sculpted owl effigy vessel by Mata Ortiz master potter Reynalda Quezada de López, sister of the famed innovator Juan Quezada. This black-on-black piece is richly burnished to a deep, mirrorlike sheen and decorated with geometric sgraffito designs meticulously incised into the surface. The spout is formed as an expressive owl head, a signature motif in Reynalda’s work that demonstrates both technical mastery and cultural symbolism.

Reynalda Quezada is celebrated as one of the foremost artists of the Mata Ortiz pottery tradition, an art movement that revitalized the ancient Casas Grandes (Paquimé) ceramic legacy of northern Mexico. Known especially for her animal effigies—owls, lizards, and other creatures—she transforms functional vessels into sculptural works of art. Her pieces are recognized internationally as museum-quality, highly sought after by collectors of Native and Latin American art.

This work not only embodies Reynalda’s individual artistry but also represents the Quezada family’s lasting contribution to Mata Ortiz pottery. Sculptural effigies of this quality are rarer within the tradition and stand out as display centerpieces, blending the refinement of burnished blackware with imaginative form.

Condition:
Good condition overall, with visible shelf wear, consistent with age. The glossy surface polish remains strong, and the incised patterns are sharply defined.

Dimensions:
Height: 10.25 inches
