Reynaldo Quezada Mata Ortiz Blackware Bowl on Iron Stand
This signed blackware pottery bowl is by Reynaldo Quezada, the youngest brother of Juan Quezada Celado, founder of the Mata Ortiz pottery movement in Chihuahua, Mexico. Reynaldo is celebrated for pioneering innovative surface treatments, most notably the tejido (woven) texture seen here. The zig-zag incisions ripple across the form, creating a mesmerizing optical rhythm that shifts as light plays over its polished surface.
Burnished with graphite to a silvery-black metallic sheen, the vessel bridges ancient Paquimé tradition with bold modern artistry. Reynaldo’s work has been featured in The Miracle of Mata Ortiz and other landmark publications, and is prized by collectors worldwide for its sculptural presence and innovation. Displayed on its fitted iron stand, this commanding piece makes a dramatic centerpiece for any collection of fine Southwestern or contemporary ceramics.
Condition
Good overall with no visible damage. The graphite finish retains its strong polish.
