Description

Marilyn Stover “Grape Vine” Hand-Sculpted Pottery Basket w/ Burl Handle

This remarkable hand-sculpted ceramic basket by Marilyn Stover, titled “Grape Vine,” is a superb example of contemporary studio pottery. The bowl is richly textured with twisting, vine-like coils, glazed in earthy golden tones, and accented with a hand-applied cluster of grapes. A natural burl handle crowns the piece, adding a dramatic organic contrast and anchoring the basket’s sculptural presence. Signed on the underside Marilyn Stover – Grape Vine, this substantial work weighs 12 lbs and measures 15 x 25.5 x 13.5 inches.

A fusion of ceramic mastery and natural material, this basket exemplifies Stover’s unique approach of designing forms around carefully chosen organic handles. Both functional and decorative, it serves as a statement centerpiece that embodies the artist’s ability to translate the beauty of nature into clay.

About the Artist:
Marilyn Stover is an accomplished ceramic artist based in Surf City, North Carolina. Her distinctive studio pottery is hand-built in coiled stoneware, often incorporating natural handles of driftwood, grapevine, cedar, mesquite burl, or bamboo. Each work begins with the selection of a handle, allowing the found material to determine the vessel’s shape and final expression.

Stover began her ceramic studies in 1998 under potter Dan Finch and expanded her training with workshops led by masters including Rudy Autio, Don Reitz, Tom Coleman, Paul Soldner, Peter Callas, and Dabra Fritts. Her work reflects both technical refinement and sculptural energy, with textured surfaces that recall vines, roots, and organic forms.

Exhibited widely across North Carolina and Michigan, her work has appeared in City Art Gallery (Greenville, NC), ArtExposure (Hampstead, NC), Chowan Arts Council (Edenton, NC), Twisted Fish Gallery (Elk Rapids, MI), and Hanni Gallery (Harbor Springs, MI). Collectors prize her ceramics for their originality and the seamless integration of hand-formed clay with elements of the natural world.
