Grandson of the legendary Candelario Medrano, Juan José continues a family legacy of transforming humble clay into bold, narrative sculptures that radiate joy and imagination.

The brightly painted vessel features a cheerful palette of red, yellow, green, and black, with cutout windows and finely outlined architectural details. A lively menagerie of sculpted animals and human figures populates the deck, while delicate wire-mounted birds soar skyward. Twin masts proudly wave hand-painted Mexican flags, crowning the composition. Each figure is individually modeled, showcasing the artisan’s whimsical vision and skilled hand.

Barro betus works are distinguished by their coating of pine resin (aceite de betus), which gives the paint its distinctive luster. These pieces are beloved for their surreal, storybook quality, often blurring the line between the real and the imagined. Medrano’s ships, roosters, churches, and mythical figures are treasured by collectors and displayed in museums dedicated to Mexican ceramics.

Condition

Good overall with age-appropriate wear. Areas of chipped paint, surface losses, and several dismembered animals present, consistent with the fragile nature of barro betus. Despite this, the work remains stable and retains strong visual impact.
