Late 19th C. Style Plains Indian Ceremonial Pipe Tomahawk – Buffalo Honoring Collection
From the Prairie Edge Buffalo Honoring Collection, this ceremonial Plains Indian pipe tomahawk is a faithful representation of 19th-century originals. The solid brass head features engraved foliate designs and a pipe bowl, symbolizing both warfare and diplomacy. Its hardwood haft is inlaid with four brass bands representing the four sacred directions and is wrapped with hide, wool cloth, and red and white glass beadwork. The drop is backed with cloth, fully beaded in a lazy-stitch triangular motif, and finished with leather fringe.
This design honors the hunter and the buffalo, with materials reflecting historic Plains craftsmanship. Such pipe/axes were given to tribal chiefs by traders and dignitaries seeking favor and played roles in important dances and ceremonies. This example is both a striking display piece and a culturally resonant artifact.
