Virginia Metalcrafters 1984 Brass Library of Congress Door Bookends
Pair of solid brass bookends crafted in 1984 by Virginia Metalcrafters, faithfully replicating the monumental doors of the Library of Congress Jefferson Building in Washington, D.C. One depicts Humanitas (humanity), the other Intellectus (intellect), each shown as a robed classical figure holding a torch—symbols of knowledge, enlightenment, and the humanities. The richly detailed relief panels are framed with a rivet-style border, echoing the grandeur of the original architectural bronze doors.
Undersides are stamped with the maker’s mark, copyright date, and the inscription “The Doors to the Library of Congress”. Substantial in both weight and presence, these functional decorative pieces are ideal for collectors of Americana, lovers of fine libraries, or those seeking historically inspired home accents.
