Description

Harper’s Weekly “The Non‑Sporting Dog Show,” Nov. 1884 Engraving — Gilt Frame

An authentic November 1884 Harper’s Weekly magazine illustration from Vol. XXVIII, No. 1458, titled “The Non‑Sporting Dog Show.” This genuine 19th‑century page was printed from finely carved wood‑engraving blocks, the standard method for Harper’s Weekly’s celebrated illustrations. It depicts a selection of distinguished show dogs, each individually identified: Duke of Leeds, Bonivard, Jumbo, Ponto, Me Too, Bonhomme, Boz, Royalist, Grand Duke, Stella, Frank, Tweed II, Scotch Collie, Deer‑Hounds.

The scene reflects the prestige of late‑Victorian dog shows—social events where prized purebred animals were exhibited as symbols of refinement. The “non‑sporting” category featured breeds valued for elegance, companionship, and distinctive traits rather than hunting ability. Many of the dogs shown were imported from Europe and highly coveted by wealthy owners.

Harper’s Weekly, America’s leading illustrated news journal of the 19th century, documented cultural trends, fashionable pastimes, and notable events with painstakingly detailed engravings. This original period page has been double‑matted and presented in a gilt‑edged, ebonized wood frame, behind glass, offering both decorative appeal and historical significance.

Condition:
Good overall. Minor chips to the bottom corners of the frame; some light debris visible behind glass. The print remains crisp with strong contrast and detail.
