Ulfert Wilke Abstract Calligraphic Ink, 1978 — Signed
Dynamic abstract calligraphic ink composition by renowned German-American artist Ulfert Wilke (1907–1987), signed and dated ’78 in the lower right. Executed in Wilke’s signature bold black ink on cream paper, the piece exemplifies his mature style—gestural, rhythmic brushstrokes arranged in layered, calligraphic clusters that invite contemplation. The work reflects the artist’s lifelong fascination with the expressive potential of line and the influence of Asian calligraphy on modern abstraction. Framed behind glass in a contemporary brushed steel frame, this piece is visually striking and a fine example of late-period Wilke.
About the Artist:
Ulfert Wilke was a pivotal figure in American abstract calligraphy, blending modernist sensibilities with traditions drawn from his deep study of Asian and particularly Japanese calligraphy. Born in Germany, he immigrated to the United States in 1938 and went on to become the founding director of the University of Iowa Museum of Art. His work was widely exhibited in major museums and is represented in prestigious collections including the Guggenheim Museum, Whitney Museum of American Art, and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Wilke’s compositions are celebrated for their lyrical gesturalism, masterful control of ink, and meditative presence.
