Hopi Koyemsi “Mudhead” Kachina by P. Takala – Polacca AZ, 1992 – Carved & Signed
This hand-carved Hopi Kachina figure represents the Koyam CE "Mudhead", one of the most iconic and culturally rich figures in Hopi ceremonial tradition. Signed P. Takala, Polacca, Ariz. (Hopi), and dated 1992, the piece is sculpted from traditional cottonwood root and decorated with natural leather, fur, and feathers. Painted in deep red and black with green and orange accents, the figure’s dynamic pose and inclusion of a baby Mudhead carried on the back reflect storytelling elements and ceremonial symbolism.
The Mudhead (Koyemsi) serves as both clown and moral guide in Hopi dances—entertaining audiences while subtly offering spiritual lessons. This figure, with expressive detailing and movement, exemplifies the evolution of late 20th-century kachina carving toward greater animation and emotional resonance.
Artist P. Takala is associated with the respected Takala family of carvers from First Mesa, renowned for their authentic and expressive work. Comparable carvings by the Takalas have appeared in Southwestern folk art galleries and collector markets for decades.
This piece is a fine example of culturally rooted Native American artistry—ideal for collectors of Hopi works, Kachinas, or Indigenous sculpture.
