Mexican Folk Art Lotería Panel — Hand Painted, Reclaimed Window Frame
A vibrant example of Mexican folk art, this hand-painted wall panel is crafted from a reclaimed wood window frame and mounted with hand-painted vignettes on canvas, inspired by traditional Lotería cards. Depicting “El Arpa,” “El Músico,” “La Dama,” and “El Violoncello,” each scene is rendered in a bold, naïve style with expressive color and character. The frame’s scalloped crest, hand-decorated in blue and gold floral scrollwork, adds a flourish of regional charm.
Originating in 19th-century Mexico, Lotería is a beloved game of chance—similar to bingo—known not only for its gameplay but also for its iconic illustrated cards, each one a visual symbol steeped in cultural meaning.
In this panel, the selected figures echo both the musical and human dimensions of the Lotería tradition. “El Músico” stands at a threshold, guitar in hand, suggesting movement, storytelling, or serenade. “La Dama” embodies femininity and elegance—an emblem of social grace. “El Arpa” and “El Violoncello,” while not standard cards in the original decks, continue the musical theme with poetic license, reinforcing the rhythm and harmony of the composition.
Condition:
In good condition overall, with visible wear throughout. The frame shows scuffing, chipped paint, and surface distressing consistent with age and the reclaimed nature of the materials. Some craquelure and finish loss is evident in the paintings, but the colors remain vibrant and stable. Please refer to photos for details. Ready to hang.
