Description

19th C. Burmese Shan/Tai Lue Buddha — Gilt Wood, Inscribed Base, 18"

This genuine 19th-century Burmese Shan Buddha is a striking example of the Tai Lue style, prized for its delicate carving and deeply spiritual symbolism. Hand-carved from a single solid block of native hardwood, the Buddha is shown in the iconic Mara Vijaya (Bhumisparsha Mudra) pose — the Earth-Touching gesture signifying the moment of enlightenment.

The statue retains significant portions of its original 24-karat gilt lacquer, with subtle black lacquer detailing in the hair and a graceful flame-like finial crowning the ushnisha — all hallmarks of northern Burma’s Shan states and Tai Lue tradition. It is mounted on a stepped red-lacquer pedestal base. On the back, a hand-inscribed Burmese script dedication remains partially legible; such inscriptions traditionally include the donor’s name, a short blessing, or a temple name, confirming its authentic use as a consecrated altar piece in a monastery or private shrine.

Dimensions:

  • Height: 18 inches
  • Width: 5.5 inches
  • Depth: 4 inches
  • Weight: 4 lb 9 oz

Condition

In good antique condition overall, showing honest signs of devotional age: surface cracks, insect erosion within the wood core, losses and flaking to the gilt and lacquer layers, and minor edge wear on the base. The inscribed dedication remains partially clear and enhances the piece’s historic and cultural authenticity. Please review all photos for a detailed view of its unique character.
