Victorian Arts & Crafts Oak Washstand with Fossil Marble Top & Delft Tiles
This exquisite late Victorian to Edwardian washstand showcases authentic British craftsmanship and a fascinating blend of natural and decorative elements. Made from solid quarter-sawn tiger oak, it features a polished black fossil marble top rich with ancient crinoid stem fossils adding unique geological charm.
Above the marble surface, a beautiful backsplash is adorned with original blue-and-white Delft-style ceramic tiles, reflecting the European decorative tastes of the period. The tilting framed mirror sits atop a raised oak back panel and shelf, typical of fine British washstands from circa 1890–1910.
Practical storage includes a wide central drawer, two smaller flanking drawers, and a spacious lower cabinet, all with original brass drop handles and turned wood knobs. A brass towel bar mounted on the side completes the piece’s elegant utility.
Originally used for personal washing before the era of indoor plumbing, this washstand today makes a stunning statement in a bedroom, bathroom, or entryway — or as a conversation piece for collectors of period furniture.
Condition
Good antique condition overall, showing wear consistent with age. The fossil marble has minor surface marks and some natural inclusions; a visible crack is present on the wooden top. The mirror glass has lost some of the reflective material. Hardware and towel bar show an attractive aged patina. Please review photos for a complete visual condition guide. Use as is or restore. Old repairs are evident.
Dimensions
Approximate size: 56 inches high (to top of mirror) x 48 inches wide x 21 inches deep.
