Description

John T. Barnum Steamer Trunk — Embossed Metal, Oak Trim, c. 1885

A beautifully preserved flat-top steamer trunk, attributed to John T. Barnum of Minneapolis, circa 1885–1895. This substantial piece showcases embossed plated iron panels in a richly detailed crocodile pattern — a sought-after finish in late Victorian travel goods — framed by solid oak slats with a warm amber patina.

The trunk rests on distinctive ebonized iron feet and features period-original plated iron hardware, including decorative corner brackets, hinge plates, and a center lock. The finish remains original, with no repainting or over-coating, preserving the aged depth of tone and tactile history.

Inside, the trunk retains vivid cobalt blue and burgundy printed paper lining, accented by a lithograph portrait and original red maker's label: John T. Barnum, 240 Nicollet Ave, Minneapolis. The lift-out tray has been functionally reinforced with newer wood panels and updated hinges. Several small compartment doors are loose or detached, adding character without disrupting integrity. The interior is factory marked.

Whether styled as a refined coffee table, blanket chest, or display piece, it offers striking visual impact and collectible historical value.

Condition

In good, sturdy condition with appropriate wear. Embossed metal panels show scattered scratches, minor denting, and oxidation consistent with age. Oak slats are complete with a glowing amber patina. Original leather handles are absent. Interior paper is intact but aged, with lifting, discoloration, and wear at seams. Interior tray has been reinforced for stability. Lock present but untested.
