Mid-Century Mexican Tree of Life Candelabra — Monochrome Terracotta, 20.5”
This Mid-Century Mexican Tree of Life (Árbol de la Vida) candelabra is a striking example of traditional folk sculpture, handcrafted from terracotta and finished in an unusual monochrome white slip. Likely originating from the artisan town of Metepec, the piece features a central sun face surrounded by molded birds, butterflies, flowers, and five integrated candle holders.
The matte finish, rustic texture, and absence of vibrant color distinguish this version from the more common polychrome designs, lending it a sculptural elegance that reflects both indigenous and colonial influences.
Condition:
In fair vintage condition with age-appropriate wear. Includes a chipped sun motif exposing red terracotta, one chipped flower, surface scuffing, and wax residue around candle openings. Hairline cracks and imperfections typical of hand-formed clay are visible but do not compromise overall stability. See final photo for condition highlights.
Size:
- Height: 20.5 inches
