Zeny & Reyna Fuentes Alebrije Lion – “León con Tortugas,” 12"This vibrant alebrije lion, titled “León con Tortugas”, is a hand-carved and painted work by renowned Oaxacan artisans Zeny and Reyna Fuentes. Crafted from copal wood and adorned with a vivid purple body, the sculpture features golden turtle motifs on its ears and stylized wave patterns on the snout. The mane and tail are composed of frayed orange rope fibers, adding dynamic texture and movement.
Signed on the underside by the artists and retaining the original label, this piece exemplifies the rich folk art traditions of San Martín Tilcajete, Oaxaca. Alebrijes are fantastical creatures that blend elements of various animals, rooted in Zapotec culture and imagination.
