Description

Herman Miller Eames Lounge Chair & Ottoman — Rosewood & Black Leather, 1970s

Few designs in furniture history are as instantly recognizable—or as enduring—as the Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman, created in 1956 by Charles and Ray Eames for Herman Miller. With its flowing molded plywood shell, sumptuous leather cushions, and unmistakable architectural base, it redefined what comfort and modernity could look like in postwar America.

This authentic 1970s set, in Brazilian rosewood veneer and black leather, comes directly from the collection of the original owner, maintaining its integrity and timeless elegance. The chair retains both the Herman Miller round metal medallion and original paper patent label, and all three rosewood shell components are factory-marked with the internal number “610”, confirming it is an originally matched production.

Designed to evoke the warm embrace of a well-worn baseball mitt, this chair was the Eameses’ first foray into the luxury market. What sets this example apart is not only its iconic materials and form, but its documented provenance and untouched originality, which appeal to both seasoned collectors and discerning modernists.

Condition

In good to fair vintage condition, this set shows honest wear consistent with decades of use and appreciation. The rosewood veneer is in very good shape, with no fading or delamination, and a long superficial scratch on the rear of the seat shell. All leather cushions are original and present. The bottom cushion has one missing button, a tear on the seating surface, and seam separation at the rear. The ottoman cushion has a large tear and general wear throughout. The aluminum bases are stable with minor oxidation and surface scuffing.

This is a chair that tells its story with pride—display-ready, or an ideal candidate for thoughtful restoration.
