Antique Claughtons Barber Chair — Edwardian Recliner, Velvet & Iron, ca. 1914
Part of the first wave of purpose-built reclining barber chairs that transformed grooming spaces in the Edwardian era, this antique chair by Claughtons Leeds Ltd represents a turning point in the evolution of barbershop culture. Designed around 1914, it merges industrial durability with the emerging emphasis on client comfort—a concept still taking shape in the professional world of grooming.
The chair features a solid hardwood frame with deeply worn crimson velvet upholstery, finished with brass nailhead trim. Its most distinctive element is the cast iron reclining mechanism, clearly stamped “Centrifugal Pat. 29800” and partially marked with “12508” or “12506”—early 20th-century patent codes that reflect ergonomic advancements. Flathead screws, bold 3" turned legs, and time-softened wear all speak to a utilitarian heritage that pre-dates the flash of chrome and hydraulics.
Whether placed in a themed interior, restoration studio, or vintage collection, this piece isn’t just functional—it tells the story of a trade in transition.
Condition
In fair condition with authentic surface wear throughout. Velvet is discolored and torn at the right armrest. Wood shows scratches, scuffs, and finish loss. Metal components are oxidized but complete, with the reclining mechanism tested and complete. Retains a rich, honest patina suitable for display or restoration.
