W. & L.E. Gurley Vernier Surveyor’s Compass – Brass, Troy NY, c. 1852–1876
This authentic 19th-century vernier surveyor’s compass was crafted by W. & L.E. Gurley of Troy, New York—renowned for precision instruments since 1852. The compass features a solid brass construction with dual spirit levels, adjustable sight vanes, and a finely engraved compass rose marked with cardinal points and degree gradations. The face is signed “W. & L.E. Gurley, Troy, NY,” indicative of hand-engraving techniques used prior to the company's adoption of machine engraving in 1876 .
Housed in its original dovetailed hardwood case, the instrument includes a worn leather strap and retains the original Gurley paper label inside the lid, highlighting the manufacturer's legacy. The case also contains the protective brass cover for the compass face.
This piece exemplifies the craftsmanship of early American engineering instruments and would be a valuable addition to any collection of antique scientific tools or Americana.
Condition
In good condition overall, exhibiting age-appropriate wear. The brass surfaces show light scratches and scuffs consistent with use, and there is some tarnishing. The leather strap is torn, and the case has surface marks but remains structurally sound. Both spirit levels are intact and functional. The compass needle is present and responsive. Please note that the original key is missing.
