1950s Aspro 6d Wall-Mount Dispenser – Self-Serve Co., Stamped 37
This vintage Aspro 6d wall-mounted dispenser, stamped “37,” was manufactured by the Self-Serve Automatic Machine Co. Ltd. of Weybridge, Surrey, circa 1950s. Designed to vend aspirin tablets for sixpence, it features a robust steel cabinet with three vertical dispensing columns, each fitted with pull levers, clear display windows, and period-accurate product labels.
The cabinet promotes Aspro—a branded aspirin distributed by Nicholas Laboratories, notable for bringing over-the-counter pain relief to the mass market. Emerging during a time when Bayer lost patent rights to aspirin in many countries, Aspro became a household name across the UK and Australia. Its slogan, “For headache, pain, colds & flu,” captured the growing public trust in self-medication. These vending machines were commonly placed in public toilets, stations, and factories—bringing affordable relief directly to workers and commuters.
A functional piece of pharmaceutical history and a standout collectible for those interested in vintage medicine, advertising, or industrial design.
Condition
In good vintage condition, exhibiting surface wear, rust spots, and paint loss consistent with age and use. One dispensing chute shows heavier wear. Original labels remain legible. Mechanisms are untested. Structurally sound and visually appealing.
