Raadvad 294 Danish Bread Slicer – Cast Iron & Wood, “Rustfri” Blade

This vintage Danish bread slicer is the Raadvad No. 294, a classic example of mid-20th-century Scandinavian industrial design. Manufactured by Raadvad, a company established in 1758 and renowned for high-quality kitchen tools, this model was introduced in the 1930s and remained in production for decades with minimal changes.

The slicer features a durable cast iron frame painted in a vibrant yellow, a wooden cutting tray, and a curved stainless steel blade marked “Rustfri” (Danish for rust-resistant). Embossed branding and model number “294” are visible on the frame, attesting to its authenticity. The turned wooden handle operates the blade smoothly, making it ideal for slicing dense rye or artisan breads.

Beyond its functional use, the slicer's bold color and sculptural form make it a striking decorative piece for rustic or vintage-themed kitchens. Notably, the blade can be professionally sharpened at Johnston’s Hardware, enhancing its practicality for continued use.

Condition

Good vintage condition with age-appropriate wear. There is visible rust and oxidation on the metal frame and blade, and the yellow finish shows wear and paint loss, particularly around the edges and base. The wooden tray exhibits light scuffing and a rich patina from use. The blade is intact and marked “Rustfri”; it remains functional and can be sharpened at Johnston’s Hardware.
