Description

C. Smith Navajo Sgraffito Pottery Jar — Hand-Coiled, 8"

This striking hand-coiled pottery jar by C. Smith (Navajo) features vibrant, multicolor sgraffito decoration—a technique where layers of color are incised to reveal intricate geometric patterns beneath. Bold bands of terracotta, blue, green, and beige wrap the surface in traditional flame and step motifs, rendered with exceptional symmetry and detail.

Signed “C. Smith, Navajo” on the underside and marked with Census No. 402435, this piece confirms its Native American authenticity and artisan origin. The globular form and flared rim reflect classic Southwestern shapes, elevated by skilled carving and color work.

An excellent piece for collectors of Native American or Southwestern ceramics, blending cultural tradition with fine craftsmanship.

Condition:

In good condition, with some wear from prior handling. A small 1/8" chip or glaze flaw is visible on the rim (see photos). No cracks or repairs noted.
