Esta Bain 1988 Blanket Woman & Sheep – Signed Clay Sculpture, As-Is
This signed 1988 ceramic sculpture by noted New Mexico artist Esta Bain depicts a tall, stylized “Blanket Woman” figure accompanied by a small terracotta sheep. Hand-sculpted in Bain’s signature Southwestern style, the woman features incised hair in long braids, turquoise-toned jewelry, and a high-gloss black glaze robe. She holds a symbolic bundle with fruit, feathers, and a blue stone accent, evoking themes of fertility and cultural tradition.
Esta Bain is widely celebrated for her serene, expressive figures rooted in Native American-inspired motifs. This piece is signed and dated “Esta Bain J89” on the underside and includes a separate, hand-molded sheep companion with richly textured fleece. Though the set shows signs of age, it retains the emotional and visual power that defines Bain’s work.
Condition
Fair overall. The main figure has a .25" front edge irregularity on the bundle, likely a firing artifact, and a .75" chip on the underside. The sheep figure shows chipping and an older repair. Both pieces remain structurally stable with strong aesthetic presence.
