Stanley Rames - Ducks in Woodland Scene

A charming and expressive original watercolor by Stanley Rames (1923–2005), this artwork captures a tranquil woodland scene animated by a group of ducks in motion. With loose yet intentional brushwork and a soft, natural palette, Rames evokes the serene atmosphere of the rural South. The scene is brought to life with his characteristic impressionistic flair, combining gentle movement with an earthy landscape.

The work is signed “Stanley Rames” at the lower right and is framed and double matted under plexiglass. A detailed biographical sheet is affixed to the verso, outlining the artist’s academic training, career, and exhibition history.

Rames was born in Arkansas and raised in California and New England. After serving as a fighter pilot in WWII—flying 50 missions before being captured and held as a POW—he pursued art at the Rhode Island School of Design and the Chicago Art Institute, specializing in set design. He later worked for NBC during the golden era of live television and became art director for WDSU-TV in New Orleans.

An influential figure in the Southern art scene, Rames taught at Tulane University and served as past president of the Louisiana Watercolor Society. He was also a founding member of the 19-state Southern Watercolor Society and an award recipient of the prestigious George Shook Award in Houston's Waterscape 2000. In 2003, he was honored with the Governor’s Arts Award in Lifetime Achievement by the Arkansas Arts Council. His work is included in collections from coast to coast, including a commission purchased by Al Hirt and donated to the Jazz Museum in New Orleans.
