M. Kelsey Laguna Hopi Longhair Katsina Doll — Carved Cottonwood
This hand-carved Longhair Katsina (Angak'china) doll by M. Kelsey of Laguna Pueblo is a vibrant, traditional representation of a revered Hopi spirit figure. Carved from cottonwood root—favored for its spiritual symbolism and workability—it stands approximately 10.5 inches tall and rests on a natural wood base.
The figure features a turquoise mask, deeply carved feather details, and a black cloak with red, white, and green banding. In both hands, she holds prayer objects, and her apron is adorned with classic Hopi geometric motifs. The colorful painted sash and meticulously carved long hair reflect rainfall, abundance, and connection to the natural world.
Signed “M. Kelsey, Laguna” on the underside and marked in pencil “Longhair Female,” this doll bridges Hopi ceremonial tradition with Pueblo craftsmanship. A meaningful piece for collectors of Native American art and Southwestern folk carving.
Condition:
In very good condition overall, with light surface wear consistent with age. The cottonwood base shows a few small scuffs. Paint remains vivid with only minor rubs; carving details are crisp and intact.
