Hopi Watermelon Clown Katsina by IMSB – Mixed Media, Signed
This expressive Hopi Watermelon Clown (Koshare) Katsina is a mixed-media ceremonial carving by IMSB, signed and titled “Watermelon Clown” on the underside. Hand-carved from wood and meticulously hand-painted, the figure features bold black-and-white stripes, a vibrant red headband, and a dramatic horned headdress.
Dressed in natural suede, fur-trimmed moccasins, and adorned with cowrie shells, cones, and cord, the figure carries a bundle of corn husks and a painted watermelon—a playful nod to the Koshare’s humorous role in Hopi tradition. The doll stands on a natural wood base and incorporates both cultural symbolism and tactile craftsmanship through the use of leather, shells, corn husk, yarn, and synthetic hair.
Watermelon Clowns serve as sacred jesters in Hopi ceremonies, offering social critique and comic relief through exaggerated behavior. This detailed carving beautifully embodies that spirit of satire and celebration.

Good condition overall. Some light wear is visible on the surface and base. One object is absent from the figure’s right hand. All other elements—including adornments and paintwork—remain intact and vibrant. Please review photos for a full visual assessment.
