Description

Sparton A.C. Receiver Model 740 Cabinet with Ornate Carved Details, Perfect for Restoration or Repurposing

This Sparton A.C. Receiver Model 740, crafted by the Sparks-Withington Company in Jackson, Michigan, is a striking example of 1920s craftsmanship. Encased in a richly detailed wooden cabinet, the piece features intricate hand-carved motifs, including ornate scrollwork, floral embellishments, and period-inspired geometric patterns. The double doors open to reveal the original radio control panel with beautifully preserved dials and knobs, along with the Sparton nameplate, which exudes vintage charm.

While originally designed as a console radio, this piece offers versatile potential. The electronics, including vacuum tubes (Philco U8, Philco 87, Philco U7, and Philco P9), have been refurbished, but the speaker is absent, leaving the unit non-functional as-is. For bidders looking to restore its original purpose, the absence of a speaker provides an exciting opportunity for a bespoke restoration project. Alternatively, its exceptional aesthetic appeal makes it an ideal candidate for creative repurposing, such as a unique bar cabinet or display case.

The cabinet’s patina and good cosmetic condition highlight its age and history while remaining suitable for display in a variety of interiors, from classic to eclectic styles.

Condition:

Good vintage condition overall. The amplifier has been recently maintained, and the electronic components have been refurbished. However, the speaker is absent, and functionality restoration will require its addition. The woodwork is in good cosmetic condition with minor surface wear consistent with its age, and the intricate carved details remain crisp and visually captivating.
