WHITE MAN'S MOCCASINS PENCIL DRAWING
Pencil Drawing of the Iconic Lee Marmon Photograph. Lee Marmom Has Deep Roots in the Laguna Pueblo and Originally Captured This Well-Known Photograph Using Color Film, and it Gained Iconic Status.
The portrait is of the 85-year-old tribal member, Jeff Sousea, who served as the caretaker of the Laguna Mission. Sousea was shy, but one day, Marmo brought the elder a tempting cigar and caught the image of him enjoying it in the afternoon sun against a rock cliff background. The juxtaposition of the sneakers took on a poignant symbolism of the modernization of tribal life.
Signed "Cortez," little information was found about the artist, but he/she beautifully captured the essence of the original photograph, absent the rock cliff in the background but with the flying bird and rising cigar smoke.
Professionally and beautifully framed in slate gray metal with black corners.
Condition: Very Good
Size: 23" x 29" x 1"
