19th-Century Gothic Revival Solid Oak Hutch
This 19th-century French Gothic Revival hutch, crafted from solid oak, is a stunning blend of function and artistry. The lower section offers two hand-cut dovetail drawers and hand carved wood-paneled doors that open to a removable shelf with adjustable heights. The upper section is adorned with two leaded stained glass doors, featuring vibrant enameled florets, flanked by turned and reeded columns. At its center, the heavily carved door showcases a beautifully carved cornucopia, symbolizing abundance and prosperity, surrounded by flowing foliate designs. A removable pediment crowns the piece, adding to its stately design.
This hutch is a prime example of the Gothic Revival movement in 19th-century France, which celebrated medieval-inspired designs and intricate craftsmanship. Furniture of this style was often found in grand châteaux, valued for its decorative beauty and timeless appeal.
Provenance:
Acquired by J.R. Ianni Antiques in the late 1990s, this hutch reflects French origins, with design elements that highlight its historic craftsmanship.
Condition:
Restored in the mid 20th century, this hutch remains sturdy and functional with age-appropriate wear. The upper back panel shows lateral splits along the top, and the center back panel has a crack with a loose railing. The lower section’s top displays smooth, worn splits, and minor cracking is visible near the base. One drawer is missing a nut on its handle, and upper shelves may require shims for leveling. These signs of wear reflect its age while preserving its utility and charm.
