Description

Herschede Grandfather Clock, Model 250

This exquisite Model 250 grandfather clock by Herschede Clock Company is renowned as the "world's finest grandfather clock." A limited edition and the last model Herschede made before closing its doors, this clock is a true piece of working art, precision-crafted completely by hand. It has been showcased at expositions in New York, London, Tokyo, and Paris and is found in the finest estate homes throughout the world, including the Kremlin.

  • Maker: Herschede Clock Company (American, 1902-1972)
  • Model: Model 250 Grandfather Clock
  • Material: Spanish Burl Olive Ash Veneer with Brass Mountings
  • Signature: Marked to dial and engraved brass plaque to the interior of the door
  • Case: Solid wood construction with brass trim, beveled glass, and finished back

The clock features a brass-inlaid Spanish burl olive ash veneer case, meticulously cut and matched by hand. The finish creates the appearance of a 200+ year-old antique. The case is adorned with 108 feet of antique strip brass, carefully applied and hand-mitered, enhancing the clock's beauty. Thick beveled plate glass panels in the front door and side panels allow a view of the brass weights and nickel cadmium/chrome chime tubes inside. The moon dial, painted by hand, features two moons and two seascapes: a triple-masted schooner passing a lighthouse and a cabin scene at the ocean's edge, rotating with the moon's phases.

The clock houses an eight-day movement with nine tubular chimes that play three tunes: Westminster (an exact duplication of the Westminster Abbey chimes), Whittington, and the exclusive-to-Herschede Canterbury Chimes. The clock has a 14-karat gold-plated dial that is hand-engraved, with silver-plated rivets affixing the dial to the faceplate. The dial features two controls: the left selects one of the three chime tunes, and the right silences the chimes. An additional lever allows turning off the hour strike. The nine Nickel Cadmium chime tubes are larger and longer than other Herschede clocks, weighing approximately 82 pounds.

The clock includes a solid brass continuous piano-hinge on the "Mummy case" style door, finished imported Spanish Olive Ash Burl and a true Bombay base with wood split, soaked, heated, and bowed into shape. It is marked with a brass plaque on the door and stamped with numbers 6078, 24, and 250. The Herschede movement is serial number 137246.

Condition: Good, runs and keeps time well.
