Background of Antonio de Deza y Ulloa:
Born in Huejotzingo on June 29, 1658, Antonio Deza y Ulloa was the son of Don Fernando Deza y de Ulloa and Doña Antonia Marcia de la Llana. His illustrious career saw him rise to prominent positions, including mayor and administrator of the assets of New Spain. He notably served as the governor and captain general of Nueva Vizcaya, a province within the Viceroyalty of New Spain, under the Spanish Empire.
Legacy and Achievements:
On October 12, 1709, Deza y Ulloa founded the city of Real de Minas de San Francisco de Cuéllar, today known as Chihuahua. His full title reflects his diverse roles: "Captain of horses and armor, knight of the Order of Santiago, official judge accountant of the Royal Treasury and Treasury of Mexico City, governor and captain general of the kingdom of New Biscay."
Renowned historians Francisco R. Almada and Zacarías Márquez, through their meticulous research, revealed that Deza y Ulloa was the governor of the province of Mexico in 1696, served as mayor of the City Council of Mexico, and played a key role in the governance of Nueva Vizcaya and the recolonization of New Mexico.
Cultural Contributions:
Deza y Ulloa also appears in the 1692 narrative by Carlos de Sigüenza y Góngora, which describes a mutiny in Mexico. He was a patron of the arts, notably sponsoring the works of Fray Antonio de Segura, and commissioned the printing of Christmas carols that further highlight his cultural influence during his governorship.
