About the Artist: Juan de Dios

Juan De Dios, recognized as the earliest identifiable Zuni jewelry maker, played a pivotal role in shaping the craft, notably mentoring his nephew Dan Simplicio Sr. among other Zuni artisans. A figure shrouded in mystery, Juan's life is vividly recalled through the stories shared by Lee Weebothe.

Juan de Dios is celebrated for mastering tufa casting in the early 20th century, a skill he developed with innovative techniques, often using kerosene or machine oil as mold releases. His work includes delicate, small animal forms in silver, resembling traditional fetishes, showcasing his exceptional attention to detail.

His most notable contributions include the intricate crucifixes and the pioneering knifewing pieces inlaid with stones, a technique possibly first developed by him. These pieces, now highly valued, mark significant advancements in the art of Zuni silversmithing and have become iconic in Native American jewelry.

Owning a piece by Juan de Dios is not just an acquisition of jewelry; it's an investment in a piece of history, crafted by a true innovator in Zuni silversmithing. His works are now cherished heirlooms, admired for generations for their cultural significance and unparalleled craftsmanship.
