About the Artist:
Hoi Lebadang
(1922- ), born in Quang Tri, Vietnam, embarked on a remarkable artistic journey that spanned both Europe and Asia. In 1939, he ventured to France to pursue his artistic calling at the Ecole de Beaux-Arts in Toulouse. His talents were quickly recognized as he garnered awards for painting, drawing, and sculpture while also securing his first commissioned work.
By 1950, Lebadang's distinctive style, which blended European and Far Eastern cultural influences, captured the attention of the Parisian art community. The director of the Far Eastern Department at UNESCO commissioned him to illustrate a book of poetry, published by Editions Euros.
In 1966, Lebadang made his debut in the United States with an exhibition of his paintings at the Cincinnati Art Museum. His art has been described as a fusion of everyday subjects transformed into dream-like expressions of thought. A masterful printmaker, Lebadang favored techniques such as etching, lithography, and serigraphy. He also created lithographs under the name Hoi.
Lebadang's works have been exhibited in galleries across Dusseldorf, Paris, Nantes, Cologne, Cannes, and Aix en Provence. His artistic legacy endures in permanent private and public collections worldwide, including the Rockefeller Collection in New York, the Loo Collection in Tokyo, the Verkerke Collection in Holland, and several notable museums in the United States and beyond, such as the Phoenix Art Museum, Cincinnati Museum, and Columbia Art Institute. His unique creations continue to captivate art enthusiasts with their grace, simplicity, and the harmonious fusion of line, shape, and color that define his poetic visions.
Hoi Lebadang's enduring artistic legacy spans continents and cultures, leaving an indelible mark on the world of art.
