Deb has been creating art in some form or another since she took her first ceramics course in high school in the 1970’s. She has been a full-time artist since 1996 when she started her own business creating this style of hand-carved clay. She has exhibited and sold her work at art festivals across the country and at select galleries. Her work has been published in magazines, books, and newspapers. Deb received her BFA in Ceramics from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and her MFA in Ceramics from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. She currently resides in Saint Paul, Minnesota.

The Zen Series
These tiles are a simple combination of intense
color and brushwork. After the intensity of design
in much of my work I am drawn to making these
pieces that can hold space and give the eye
a place to rest. Tiles are rolled out and slowly
dried to keep them flat. When dried the base color
is painted on in layers to allow crackle in the surface
to develop creating a subtle texture. The lines are
then painted on, sometimes freely, sometimes
painstakingly, looking for a feeling of spontaneity.
After firing tiles are mounted and prepared for hanging.
