About the Artist:
(Courtesy, Fine Art America)
Artist Ruth Drayer is a colorist. She paints from her love of working with color -- which speaks a wordless language that raises consciousness. Her work is spiritual, calm and meditative and as she paints, her main concerns are listening and watching the layers of brush strokes interact until finally the work emerges.
Her love affair with color began while writing, as colors filling her dreams. Ruth has developed her own technique. She begins by texturing the blank canvas which adds mystery and depth to her work. Then she sands it and prays while scrawling in sacred symbols or beautiful words -- then begins concealing them. This can take many layers but adds to the piece. Ruth says, 'both writing and painting are about communicating -- sometimes my work seems to whisper, and often...I tell it 'speak up!'...Other times, its colors are bold and brilliant. I believe my work carries an energy for healing that soothes hearts and souls.
Her career began with her first completed painting being sold before she was even sure it was finished. She received a Purchase Award in the first juried show she entered and received an Award of Excellence in the Healing Power of Art Exhibition in New York City. She was included in the 2003-4 New Art International Compendium of Recent Work by World Contemporary Artists. She's had numerous one-woman shows and participated in group shows in New Mexico and Texas. Her paintings are in private collections throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico and Spain.
