Before toilet paper, most people used whatever was free and readily available for personal hygiene. While the Greeks and Romans used communal tersoria, others chose wood shavings, hay, rocks, corn cobs, and even frayed anchor cables.
It took until 1890 when the Scott Paper Company put toilet paper on a roll and perforated it for easy removal.
