Large Jemez Wedding Vase By Maxine Andrew
Signed "Maxine Andrews Jemez Pueblo "Walatowa" 96"
Large Two-tone glazed pottery vase with traditional black overglaze paintings.
About the Artist:
Maxine T. Yepa is a member of the Oak Clan. She was born in 1970 and is half Jemez Pueblo and half Walatowa Indian. Maxine developed an interest in hand coiling pottery at the age of 15. Her grandmother, Anasita Chinana, taught her the fundamentals of working clay art.
Maxine specializes in handmade traditional and contemporary styled Jemez pottery. On her contemporary styles, she hand carves melon ribs or swirls on each piece to add some flare to her work. She signed her earlier work: Maxine Andrews, Jemez/Walatowa, but now signs her pottery: Maxine Yepa Walatowa/Jemez. Maxine is related to Christine Tosa (mother), Jennifer Andrew (sister), Pauline Romero (aunt) and Donald Chinana (cousin).
