Brenda J. Murphy is a native of Texas and grew up fascinated by horses. She began drawing horses at an early age and later gravitated toward art professionally. After earning a BFA at the University of Texas at Arlington, she worked for the next 15 years as a graphic designer and illustrator in Dallas. The artist eventually returned to Arlington, where she maintains a studio today.
Murphy is able to achieve startling real effects working in the difficult medium of graphite. "I especially enjoy working in graphite pencil," she says. "It is a challenge to interpret tones, values, shapes, and textures of a subject that I might overlook if I worked in another medium." Her subject matter ranges from working cowboys to children to horses. Each work has a quality of expressiveness that gives life to the figures.
Her work is found in private collections across the country and in the Bosque Conservatory of Art in Clifton, Texas. She has won medals in juried competition, and her work has been featured in national publications and appeared in this year's Prix de West.
