Susi Nagoda Bergquist "South Horse"
From The Artist:
The Linocut, South Horse, Was Conceived As Part Of The Directional Horse Series. This Series Of Prints Cama About From A Combination Of Happenings.
The First Of These Was The Origin Myth Of Horses. The First Horses Are Seen As Coming From Not Onlythe Water, But From Each Of The Cardinal Directions. These In Turn Are Represented By Colors (White, Blue, Red, Yellow, Black, Speckled, Depending On The Culture), As Are The Horses Of Varying representational Colors.
The Second Impulse Was From A Trip To A Trading Post Near Aztec Ruin, Where I Viewed A Wonderful set Of Navajo Directional Horse Fetishes. It Was Near The End Of My Trip And The End Of My Budget, So Alas, I Just Looked. However, I Have Often Thought Longingly Of Those Great Fetishes. In Much Of The Religious Literature Of The Navajo, One Sees The Importance Of Directional Color. Color Appears In Songs, Prayers, Myths, Poems And Ceremonies On Most Of The Native American Peoples.
Taking All Of These Things Into Consideration. I Have Undertaken To Portray Coyote On His Collection Of Directional Horses. South Horse Is His Yellow Horse, The Color Of Rain. South Horse Was Done In A Hand Pulled Edition Of 35, By Artist, Susi Nagoda Bergquist
