Original Woody Crumbo Silkscreen

Artist Bio:

  • Native American artist Woody Crumbo (1912 – 1989). He is famed for his depictions of Native Americans and nature.
  • Summing up his work, he said: "Half of my life passed in striving to complete the pictorial record of Indian history, religion, rituals, customs, way of life, and philosophies … a graphic record that a million words could not begin to tell."
  • Background
  • Crumbo, a member of the Potawatomi tribe of Oklahoma, was orphaned at the age of six and spent the remainder of his childhood living with a number of other Native American families.
  • He studied art at the Chilocco Indian Agricultural School from the age of 17 and began exhibiting and selling his pieces in the 1930s.
  • He was a great advocate of Native American art throughout this lifetime and was director of the El Paso, Texas Museum of Art in 1968.
