Rose L. Miniature Acoma Bird-Form Basket with Twisted Handle
A miniature Acoma Pueblo basket-form vessel by potter Rose L., hand-coiled and hand-painted in the classic Acoma palette of black and orange on a white slip. Two modeled bird heads flank the rim — each with a rounded head, pointed beak, and painted eye — while a twisted rope handle in terracotta clay arcs between them. The body carries bold geometric devices: hatched triangles, a stepped fret, split-leaf motifs, and orange fill bands. Signed on the underside "Acoma / Rose L."
The double-bird form with a braided carrying handle is a beloved Acoma novelty type, echoing the effigy and figural traditions of the pueblo on a scale that fits in the palm. At roughly two inches tall, this is genuine miniature work — the fine brushwork and clean coil construction demonstrate the control required to execute full-size design vocabulary in a fraction of the space.
CONDITION
Excellent, no damage. Paint is crisp and the twisted handle is intact and well-seated at both bird heads.
