French Art Deco 8-Day Miniature Travel Alarm Clock in Fitted Burl Case
A French Art Deco travel timepiece in the machine-age idiom, its stepped rectangular case built up from contrasting nickel-chrome and copper-toned metal with a folding brass carry handle and blocky ziggurat feet. The dial is signed 8 JOURS — French for the eight-day movement — with hand-painted gilt Arabic numerals, twin geometric border tracks, and stylized fretted hands. A small inset alarm-set subsidiary dial sits at the lower right of the main chapter, a hallmark of the traveling alarm form.
The whole clock nests inside a fitted two-door burl-figured case with satin-lined interior and an engraved silver-tone clasp, opening to display the clock upright as a bedside piece. The nickeled back plate carries the winding, setting, and alarm arbors along with folding bail feet. A period repair ticket from Knight's Clock Shop, San Pedro, California, dated 1977, accompanies the lot and identifies it as a French travel clock. Beyond the 8 JOURS dial signature, no separate manufacturer name is confirmed on the movement.
CONDITION
Good and fully functional; tested and running. Expected age throughout: scuffing, finish wear and loss to the plated and copper surfaces, and patina to the brass handle. The fitted burl case shows edge wear and soiling to the exterior with light staining to the silk lining.
