Arden Lanham Studio Stoneware Lidded Casserole, Speckled Glaze, 1981
A hand-thrown lidded casserole by studio potter Arden Lanham, dated 11/26/81. The oatmeal-speckled glaze breaks warm iron-brown over the throwing rings, exposed clay foot, and rim, a controlled reduction effect that pools amber in the recesses and gives the wheel-turned form its depth. The domed lid carries hand-painted concentric brushwork radiating from a pinched, faceted finial, and pinched lug handles flank the base for a secure lift. An impressed square maker's stamp sits on both lid and body.
The underside is incised ARDEN LANHAM 11/26/81 with the artist's cipher, and the interior repeats the signature beneath the glaze. Lanham's work sits squarely in the Anglo-Oriental studio tradition popularized through the Leach-Hamada lineage: functional oven-to-table stoneware, generous throwing, and glazes that reward close looking. The soft celadon-gray pooled interior contrasts the toasted exterior, and the ovoid profile makes this as much a serving piece as a baking vessel.
CONDITION
Excellent. No chips, cracks, or repairs; lid seats correctly on the body. Speckling, iron spotting, and glaze pooling are intended features of the reduction firing, not flaws.
