Description

L. Hitchcock Green & Gilt Fan-Back Windsor Side Chairs, Set of 4

A matched set of four fan-back side chairs by the Hitchcock Chair Company, each carrying the stenciled maker's stamp "L. HITCHCOCK. HITCHCOCKS-VILLE. CONN. WARRANTED." in gilt along the rear seat rail — the mark that places these squarely in the 20th-century revival production out of Riverton, Connecticut (the renamed Hitchcocksville). The form is faithful to Lambert Hitchcock's original early-19th-century formula: seven turned spindles fanning to a shaped, arched crest rail decorated with a gilt grape-and-leaf stencil, turned and gilt-accented stiles, saddle-shaped seats in warm natural maple, and bulbous turned legs and stretchers painted in the house's signature dark green with gold-banded accents.

The Hitchcock Chair Company revival — operating from the 1940s through 2006 — produced period-faithful reproductions of Lambert Hitchcock's original 1820s–1840s designs for a market that never stopped wanting them. The chairs sold steadily through New England furniture retailers and department stores for decades, and matched sets of four in the green-and-gilt colorway remain among the most sought revival examples — usable, identifiable, and consistently in demand among American country furniture collectors, Colonial Revival decorators, and buyers furnishing a farmhouse or period dining room. All four chairs present as a cohesive set: same crest stencil, same green ground, same maple seat.

CONDITION

Fair overall; all four chairs are structurally sturdy with tight joinery. Painted surfaces show scuffing, finish wear and loss, and paint chipping and flaking concentrated at the legs, feet, stretchers, and stile turnings. The maple seats carry scratching and surface discoloration consistent with regular use; gilt banding is worn in places across all chairs.
