Description

Sunbeam Mixmaster Model 12 Stand Mixer, Turquoise, 1950s — Glasbake Bowl

The Sunbeam Mixmaster Model 12 is the machine that defined the mid-century American kitchen — and this one does it in the hardest colorway to find: a rich, factory-original turquoise that pairs the cast-iron motor housing with a matching Glasbake glass mixing bowl made expressly for Sunbeam, marked on the underside "GLASBAKE MADE FOR Sunbeam." The Model 12 was Sunbeam's flagship stand mixer of the late 1950s, distinguished from earlier Mixmaster generations by its 12-speed dial — a black bakelite drum on the rear of the motor head labeled with specific tasks at each position, from "fold/stir" up through "whipping potatoes/juicing" at the top end. The gold-script Sunbeam logo and the embossed MIXMASTER nameplate remain crisp. The iconic planetary-action beaters — original, straight, and undamaged — drop into chrome-plated sockets and orbit the bowl rather than simply spinning in place, a design advantage Sunbeam promoted heavily in period advertising.

The mixer separates from its turquoise-painted cast-iron base with a single flip of the catch-release lever, converting instantly to a hand mixer — one of the Model 12's signature conveniences. All speeds test accurate and the motor runs cleanly. The Glasbake bowl seats on the turntable platter built into the base and rotates as the beaters work, giving even coverage without manual repositioning. The two-prong power cord is original and intact, with minor surface cracking to the insulation jacket that does not affect function.

CONDITION

Good overall, fully functional, and tested — all 12 speeds operate accurately and the motor performs well. Cosmetic blemishes are concentrated on the base: paint loss and scratching along the lower perimeter edge, with scattered chips and scuffs to the cast-iron surfaces consistent with decades of kitchen use. The power cord shows age-related surface cracking to the outer insulation jacket but remains functional. The original beaters are straight, undamaged, and work correctly.
