Description

Emil J. Weber Electric Co. San Francisco Advertising Thermometer, 1950s

Painted steel advertising thermometer from Emil J. Weber Electric Co., "Your Electrician," of 258 Dorland St., San Francisco. The mustard-yellow face carries black display lettering, an enamel Fahrenheit scale reading -70 to 120, and the twin exchange telephone listings — UNderhill 1-2200 and HEmlock 1-6961 — that date the piece to the 1950s, before all-numeric dialing. The tube is Made in U.S.A., and the mercury column is intact behind the metal cage that guards the bulb.

Two-letter exchange prefixes like UNderhill and HEmlock place this squarely in the era when a local electrician handed out a wall thermometer as year-round advertising — the kind that hung by a back door and reminded a household whose number to call. The steel back retains its original hanging tabs and mounting holes. A genuine slice of mid-century San Francisco trade advertising.

CONDITION

Good, original unrestored condition with age-appropriate wear. Chipping and paint loss with surface rust concentrated at the top mounting hole and along the edges; a dent to the body and light scuffing across the face. The back shows scattered rust and retains its original hanging hardware. Thermometer column reads and appears functional.
