Description

Bronze Sun Wukong Monkey King in Armor with Brass Staff, Battle Stance

A finely modeled bronze figure of Sun Wukong, the Monkey King of the sixteenth-century Chinese novel Journey to the West, caught mid-stride atop a churning bank of scrolling clouds. The casting captures the character's defining features in sharp relief: the fanged, snarling simian face beneath a crested phoenix-feather cap, the layered lamellar armor with incised geometric and floral panels, and the billowing sashes that lend the whole figure a sense of forward motion. Both hands grip his signature weapon, the Ruyi Jingu Bang — here a slender brass staff that seats into the raised fists and rises well above the figure.

The dark patinated bronze contrasts against the polished brass of the staff, a deliberate two-metal composition. Detailing runs deep across the armor plates, the frog-form fittings at the knee, and the swirling cloud-and-flame base that reads as the hero riding the wind. The removable staff seats through the upper fist and grounds in the lower, allowing the piece to break down for transport. Unmarked. The underside shows a scalloped, hollow-cast base with a central aperture.

CONDITION

Very Good. Well-cast throughout with crisp surface detail and a warm dark patina; no remarkable damage. The brass staff is removable and seats securely through both hands.
