Description

Copper & Brass Coal Scuttle Helmet with Delft Ceramic Handle & Brass Scoop

A Dutch-style helmet coal scuttle in hammered copper and brass, the ovoid body raised over a stepped brass pedestal foot and finished with a swing bail handle. One side carries a cast brass lion-mask mount anchoring the arched carrying handle; the opposite side mounts a tilting pour handle fitted with a blue-and-white Delft-style ceramic grip. The hand-planished surface shows the characteristic dimpled texture of raised copperwork throughout. Unmarked.

Scuttles of this form served as decorative coal or kindling holders beside the hearth from the late 19th century onward, the seated helmet shape allowing coal to be poured directly from the tilting spout. This lot includes the matching seamed brass coal scoop with tubular handle. The set works equally well today as a fireside vessel or a planter and magazine holder.

CONDITION

Good overall with honest signs of use. Denting and finish wear/loss are present across the copper body, along with light scattered scratching to the brass scoop. Crazing to the glaze on the ceramic handle. Interior shows patination and staining consistent with age and use.
