F. Cortez Wilson & Co. One-Gallon Copper Measure, U.S. Standard, Chicago
A hand-hammered one-gallon copper liquid measure stamped U.S. STANDARD / F. CORTEZ WILSON & CO / CHICAGO, with the maker's "AC KRAFT · CHICAGO · 4060" oval and a clear 1 GAL. capacity mark on the body. The tapered, flared form pours through a wide lip and is fitted with a strap handle and a riveted upper band. Tin-wash lining survives to the interior. Body panels show the characteristic dimpled planishing of hand-raised copper hollowware.
F. Cortez Wilson & Co. supplied certified measuring and dispensing ware to the Chicago dairy, brewing, and commercial trade — the "U.S. Standard" stamp designating a legally verified capacity vessel. Pieces like this saw daily service filling and portioning by the gallon; the "AC Kraft" mark identifies the manufacturing source of the certified measure.
CONDITION
Good with age-appropriate wear. A dent is present to the body along with scattered scratches and handling marks. Interior tin lining is worn and darkened with patches of oxidation; base shows tarnish and verdigris spotting. Maker's marks and capacity stamp remain crisp and legible.
