Colonial Virginia Cast Brass 1776 American Eagle Bookends, Pair
A matched pair of cast bookends modeled as the American federal eagle, wings sweeping forward to cradle the books, talons planted on a plinth cast 1776. The heavily worked feather detail, hooked beak, and forward-leaning stance draw on the eagle-and-shield vocabulary that decorated American desks and libraries through the mid-twentieth century. The finish reads as antiqued gilt-brass, with high points rubbed to reveal a paler tone beneath — a deliberate two-tone treatment that emphasizes the modeling.
The underside carries the maker's mark Colonial Virginia, Hampton, VA with a copyright symbol and model number, seating this pair with the patriotic reproduction lines popular for library and study decor. Each is fitted with a felted cork bottom to protect shelf and desk surfaces. Sold as a pair; the books shown are for display and are not included.
